Best new music: Westside Cowboy find something old for something new

Courtesy of the artist

Every week, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries live on 88Nine at 10 p.m. every Monday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.

Manchester garage-y indie-rock quartet Westside Cowboy recently shared a fan favorite called “Pin Up Boys” from their forthcoming debut, It Goes On. The band’s edgy energy is rooted in pop but goes beyond those structures. You’ll hear a little Brit-pop (a la Teenage Fanclub) and a little American-influenced indie rock (like Parquet Courts).

They shared that the new single “was written … using an acoustic guitar, a drum machine sample pad and some screwdrivers as drumsticks.” They also revealed that “it is by far the longest-serving song on the album and the one that we have played the most live, which was a blessing and a curse when we came to record … after realising this song was set in its ways.”

It Goes On will come out Aug. 21 via Island Records, and “Pin Up Boys” is right here on this episode of What’s All This, which is available via the player at the top of the page. Give it a listen and then come back to 88Nine at 10 p.m. next Monday and every Monday for more adventures in new music.
