Best new albums out Sept. 4
Amyl & The Sniffers, Truth or Consequence (Live From El Coyote)
Did you see the Aussie punk band at Summerfest this year, or are you just regretting missing them? No matter your level of pining, Truth or Consequence (Live From El Coyote) will capture that live-wire energy we’ve come to expect from Amyl & The Sniffers, even on an album that presents their songs as stripped-back, country-influenced versions.
The whole experience you’ll hear on the record was recorded live at El Coyote Mexican Restaurant in Los Angeles in April of last year. It also includes a bonus pair of unreleased tracks, as well as a cover of Slim Dusty’s classic song “Lights On The Hill.” And the band isn’t stopping there, with the live concert film screening across the globe.
Medium Build, King of Having Fun
Nick Carpenter’s project Medium Build is being touted as a midpoint between Noah Kahan and Role Model — something that’s sonically true-ish, although Carpenter definitively has his own thing going on. Steeped in his Georgia roots and his now-Alaskan home, he trades jabs with shadows and his self-proclaimed impulse to transform self-loathing into art. The latest result of that is King of Having Fun, which will go on the road this fall, including an Oct. 15 date at Turner Hall Ballroom.
Chat Pile, Who Loves the Sun
Oklahoma City-based quartet Chat Pile are back with another heavy-sounding record, once again creating a crushing and crass-noise rock assault that manages to be cerebral in that it capably expresses raw humanity in this era of cold overreach. Their third full-length’s catharsis is defiant, real and organic in both sound and sentiment. RIYL: Gilla Band, Turnstile, Big Black and the Jesus Lizard.
Lilliput’s pick: Medicine, We’ll Run Away
Medicine is a dream-leaning, shoegazery, L.A.-based pop-rock band led by Brad Laner, who’s ably supported by Julia Monreal and Jim Goodall. The trio revel in all things fuzzy, circling around guitar sounds and vintage pop sentiments (especially The Beach Boys) to straddle the lines of the 1950s and the 1990s, hitting in a very Twin Peaks way. We’ll Run Away released digitally late last year and is finally seeing its vinyl counterpart today.
