You can stay inside this former Schlitz tied house in Bay View

Ways To Subscribe

Every week on Urban Spelunking, Radio Milwaukee’s Nate Imig and OnMilwaukee’s Bobby Tanzilo dig into the buildings and architectural features that help retain the city’s sense of history while it builds for the future.

Nestled in the Bay View neighborhood pocket just west of Humboldt Park and Howell Avenue, a beautiful former Schlitz tied house is now available as an Airbnb. The 1899 corner tavern at 2549 S. Burrell St. was nearly lost in a terrible fire back in 2013. Thankfully, it was saved and rehabbed, and maintains much of its original character.

An original and striking turret, capped with a spire, towers above the sidewalk, meant to lure neighborhood foot traffic inside. And even though it's no longer open to the public, you can stay inside — as a guest.

On this episode, as we check another tied house off our list, we learn more about the history and the details of its transformation. Listen to the podcast, and be sure to check out Bobby's story at OnMilwaukee for more photos and history.
