Each week, Audio Taste Test serves up an obscure and independent playlist for your evening, tantalizing your musical palate with flavors from all different soundscapes. Listen on demand here and on 88Nine from 10-11 p.m. every Thursday.
The second coming of Sade is here, and her name is SSTEDI. A gospel singer out of Maryland, you can hear her Jamaican roots throughout her debut album Not Alone that dropped this year. It contains smooth and sultry songs that seamlessly blend from track to track.
On the other end of the spectrum is New Zealand artist Kiki Rockwell. She pairs medieval melodies with chamber music to make you feel like you’re walking the halls of a haunted castle while the paintings are watching you. Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I feel like it’s never too early to start celebrating the spooky season.
There’s an elephant in the room this week, courtesy of Boston-based indie rock group Fai Laci. Their track — titled “Elephant,” of course — stands out with distorted guitars nestled in wave blending glam, classic and punk rock. If you like Cage the Elephant (pun intended), their debut album might just be your next obsession.
Yvonne Catterfeld and Fattú Djakité collaborated on a track titled “Irgendwas,” which is German for “something” or “anything,” that blends two different worlds They met on a musical journey to Cabo Verde, and the experience was so gratifying they had to make a song together.
International artists Bon Entendeur and The Cavemen also make an appearance with grooves that are reminiscent of where they’re from. Bon Entenduer is an electro-pop group out of Paris, while The Cavemen are a highlife, jazz and afrofusion group out of Nigeria.
Happy tasting!
