The DJ Takeover is a program for listeners to discover their favorite artist's favorite artists, working to foster connection to the music and makers inside and outside our city. For the entire hour, we go down the rabbit hole of stories from their past, experiences of the present and goals for the future.

Brett Newski is a literal world traveler. His travels have taken him across the globe — and, by extension through his songs, he’s taken his listeners with him.

Figuratively, Newski is also someone who walks the walk while talking the talk. He’s an artist through and through, something he makes evident via his next collection of music coming May 2 under the name Brett Newski & The Bad Inventions. Titled ameriCONa Pt 1: Educate Freeloaders to Buy Art, the album’s intention — as Newski put it — is to urge fans “to purchase music directly — a step toward securing a living wage for artists in an era where streaming royalties have long failed to do so.”

It’s a project that will be readily available as a digital download, as well as on vinyl, CD and limited-edition formats. You’ll find it on his website, at local record shops and at live shows. The one place you won’t find it is on streaming services.

Newski stepped up to our microphone for this DJ Takeover to talk about the album, his evolution as an artist, and his musical influences that span from Jonathan Richman to Courtney Barnett to Jimmy Eat World. In short, you’ll hear how the eclectic Brett Newski came to be.
