DJ Takeover: Bounding through folktronica with Rabbitology

As a member of Generation Z, it warms my heart to meet an artist who also went through her coming of age to the sounds of Florence & The Machine.

Moved by the electronic indie-folk artists of the mid-2010s, Nat Timmerman has followed in their footsteps. Now, she supports the next generation of folktronica for all those in the midst of soul-seeking through her consequential project Rabbitology.

Aiming to empower listeners to find their voice, Timmerman pointed toward music as a means to make that happen. “As artists… you connect with people at a different level,” she began. “I might write one thing down on paper, but the way someone interprets it might be more powerful to them than what I initially meant. I really hope that people take inspiration from what they’re hearing to strengthen their own voice through a song or piece of media that already exists.”

This has been Rabbitology’s experience with the nature and music that surrounds her. She picked AURORA’s song, “Hunger” to share during the Takeover, explaining that “as a young weird girl in middle school and high school, seeing someone be successful and still be weird was so like, ‘Oh, okay, I don’t have to change for the world’”

Representing herself through the metaphor of a rabbit, Timmerman describes the name “Rabbitology” as “the study of herself.” The Michigonian’s relationship with nature and wildlife also sets the scene for her layered production style.

At the age of just 21, Timmerman is the sole producer behind her music. Drawing inspiration from artist Cosmo Sheldrake’s found-sound production style, she ties in frog croaks, cockroach hisses, crackling fire and deep breathing — her way of absorbing her surroundings and giving back to them.

This ever-unique creative writer and musician makes a stop in Milwaukee with a headlining spot at Cactus Club on Aug. 2. Her debut sister EPs, Living Ghost and Living Ghost: Still Rising, are out now via Nettwerk Music Group.
