Every Saturday night, In the Mix sets the vibe as DJ Kenny Perez mixes up the hottest sounds from the electronic dance music scene, bringing to the forefront some of Milwaukee's most talented DJs and producers.
In this episode, I got the chance to highlight a team-up that rides the line between historic and modern.
HoneyLuv, Chicago house legend Marshall Jefferson and rhys from the sticks joined forces on “High In Ibiza,” a track that draws a direct line back to the roots of 1980s Chicago house. Released on Helix Records, the collaboration arrives 40 years after Jefferson’s 1986 classic “Move Your Body,” a record that helped establish piano as one of house music’s defining sounds.
On the new track, that legendary sound meets HoneyLuv’s new-school energy, with rolling synths, legendary drum patterns and the unmistakable piano house sound. HoneyLuv called the record “sexy” and “euphoric,” inspired by the energy of her biggest Ibiza season yet. It’s less a throwback than a meeting of generations, connecting the sound Jefferson helped build in Chicago with the place where house music lives today.
