Best new music: Natalie Bergman aims to belong on ‘Gunslinger’

Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries at 2 p.m. every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music

Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and producer Natalie Bergman of Wilde Belle is back for the first time with new solo music since her 2021 debut, Mercy.

With “Gunslinger,” she announces her sophomore solo album, My Home Is Not In This World, with its strong Motown vibes plunked somewhere in the California desert; it’s a cinematic and dusty sound that feels both confident and searching, calling from the past while calling out to the future.

Recorded analog-style to tape, and produced by her brother and longtime collaborator Elliot Bergman, the full 12-track record promises to “shimmer with gospel soul, country-western heartache, and rock 'n' roll grit.”

Talking about the lead single, Bergman noted that “[t]he title is an acknowledgement of finding my place on Earth — even though I’ve never truly felt like I belonged here.” The search continues when the full album releases July 18 to Third Man Records.

Hear Natalie Bergman’s “Gunslinger” on the latest episode of What’s All This, which you can check out using the player at the top of the page and find in regular rotation on 88Nine this week. I’ll be back at 2 p.m. next Sunday and every Sunday with another collection of the latest tracks on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
