Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries at 2 p.m. every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
The always-engaging and perpetually sonically challenging avant rock ’n’ roll project Water From Your Eyes is lining up an adventurous new full-length for release later this summer, and first single “Life Signs” is a surprising sound bite of multiple musical flavors.
The revamped project originally formed as a duo by Rachel Brown and Nate Amos, but the fresh lineup makes them work as a touring outfit and allows them to get even more exploratory. They still revel in shifting rhythms and chug-y guitars, and on the new track they add some pop-rocks of twang and bossa nova that turn a lil’ prog-y. However off the rails they go, the lightness of Brown’s voice keeps it all locked in.
The New Yorkers will release It’s a Beautiful Place on Aug. 22 and play Madison’s High Noon Saloon on Oct. 1, but you can hear “Life Signs” from Water From Your Eyes on the latest episode of What’s All This. Check it out using the player at the top of the page, then be sure to tune into 88Nine at 2 p.m. next Sunday and every Sunday for a fresh batch of tracks on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
