Every Monday, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries every Sunday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music

Brooklyn band Geese — led by the strikingly voiced Cameron Winter — just shared their newest single, “Taxes.” It’s the first track to welcome their next (and fourth) album, Getting Killed, set for official release to Partisan Records on Sept 26.

Geese shared that after being approached by Kenneth Blume (aka Kenny Beats) at a music festival, they tracked the album in his L.A. studio in about a week with little time for overdubbing. The finished project emerged as something they describe as a “chaotic comedy, shambolic in structure but passionately performed, informed by an exacting vision, balancing a disarming new tenderness with an intensified anger, seemingly trading a love of classic rock for a disdain for music itself.”

That disdain has a pretty light touch, because Geese — try as they might — still remain hopelessly musical. As always, they simply choose to push the edges of their musical bounds. Psych, folk and rock all bleed and blend, and Winter’s warbly voice leaves the listener on edge of lyrical consciousness, inspiring rapt attention through seemingly effortless poetry that magnetizes through its simple realness.

Hear “Taxes” from Geese on the latest episode of What’s All This, which you can hear in full using the player at the top of the page. Then be sure to tune into 88Nine at 2 p.m. Sundays for a fresh batch of tunes on the next episode of What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
