Best new music: Tyler Ballgame wraps vintage sounds in fresh feelings

Every week, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries live on 88Nine at 10 p.m. every Monday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.

L.A. (via Rhode Island) crooner Tyler Ballgame went with For the First Time, Again as a title for his debut, and the fresh-feeling choice fits like a glove. That also goes for lead single “I Believe in Love,” which transports you back to the era of classic pop ‘n’ roll sounds of Lennon, Harrison and Orbison — but with a modern heart and soul.

The classic hallmarks suit Ballgame’s voice to a tee, and producers Jonathan Rado (of Foxygen fame) and Ryan Pollie really brought out that vintage ’60s and ’70s feel by using equipment and instruments from that era. Not unlike the love- and heartbreak-focused Orbison, Ballgame shares that “I Believe in Love” is an ode to "love of love and the fools it makes.”

You can listen to the new track from Tyler Ballgame on the latest episode of What’s All This using the player at the top of the page, then check back in for another collection of new music on 88Nine at 10 p.m. every Monday.
