Best new music: ‘Not Broken’ is rousing reassurance from Tōth

Every week, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries live on 88Nine at 10 p.m. every Monday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.

Alex Toth — one half of Rubblebucket — just officially announced And the Voice Said, a new album under his solo project Tōth, by dropping the song that holds the album title’s lyrical reference.

“Not Broken” is another really great example of the pop-music genius Tōth has been capable of for years, and things get even more exciting on this new project with Caroline Rose on the co-produce and collabs with artists like Kimbra.

He describes this particular album as “equal parts prayer and punchline, for anyone choosing to stay,” written after the severing of a significant relationship. Of the lead single, he adds that the upbeat song is a “love song to his inner child,” and it brims with universal appeal.

Look for the full album Feb. 27 via Egghunt and Northern Spy Records, and catch “Not Broken” on this episode you can enjoy by tapping the “Listen” button at the top of the page.
