Best new music: Indigo Sparke swims in meditative waters on ‘Weird Fish’

Courtesy of the artist

Every week, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries live on 88Nine at 10 p.m. every Monday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.

As if the task of songwriting wasn’t monumental enough, California-based singer-songwriter Indigo Sparke’s underlined the experience by recording her upcoming album in England while she was 33 weeks pregnant.

There Is A Light On the Horizon Line (produced by the famed John Parish) captures this transformational stage for Sparke by spotlighting motherhood, devotion, memory, identity and the impact of intimacy. You can hear that last quality in her hushed but steady voice on lead single “Weird Fish,” which she explained as “a meditation on the strange intelligence of love — how intimacy asks us to shed old patterns and imagine new ways of being together.”

The album gets its release Feb. 12 via Everwilde Records, but you can hear “Weird Fish” on this episode using the player at the top of the page. Then come back to 88Nine for a fresh batch of tunes at 10 p.m. next Monday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
