Every week, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries live on 88Nine at 10 p.m. every Monday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.
Mother Soki, the darkly synth-centered project of Minneapolis’ Annie Tammearu, recently shared a new track called “Mussel” that’s destined for her soon-to-drop EP.
Tammearu described the new songs as “a list of mantras and counter-mantras tied to the same world.” Bringing them to life involved running sterile, computer-recorded stems through a multitrack tape machine and adjusting the speed on the fly to pick up analog artifacts, blurring past and present.
Mother Soki’s inspiration comes from varied places like Cocteau Twins, Prince and Joni Mitchell’s experimental 1980s records, as well as David Lynch and cinematic sources like The Neverending Story and Labyrinth. Are they embedded in this latest single? Find out when you listen to “Mussel” as part of this episode, which is available via the player at the top of the page. It’ll also be on the Act 2 EP that comes out Nov. 20.
