Best new music: Being Dead’s rare homage to freestyle canoeing

Being Dead, Instagram

Every week, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf shares a sonic gem she found using her nearly 20 years of new-music exploration experience. You can hear all her discoveries live on 88Nine at 10 p.m. every Monday on What’s All This: Adventures in New Music.

Melodic psych-punk band Being Dead are back with their latest pair of singles, "Aquarium" and “Man or Myth.” The Austin-based trio shared that the latter pays homage to freestyle-canoeing star Marc Ornstein, with the music video featuring footage of the man himself.

In a press release for the John Congleton-produced tunes, the band said the songs “mark a triumphant new chapter for Being Dead” and that “the music is as strange as it is immediate … as unpredictable as it is impossible to shake.”

Being Dead recently signed to Polyvinyl Records and are warming up to deliver more new material soon. Their last full-length, 2024’s EELS, was a delight and gained them lots of new fans (deservedly so). I’m looking forward to hearing more in the new year, but in the meantime, find both singles out now and “Man Or Myth” in this episode.
