Greendale municipal building </br>now community meeting space

This week OnMilwaukee’s Bobby Tanzilo takes us to the City of Greendale to visit a public building converted into a community asset -- the Hose Tower in the village's downtown business district.

Tanzilo writes the “art deco gem” was completed in 1939, originally used by the volunteer fire department to hang wet hoses to dry after a fire.  But after decades of use, services were relocated to other, newer buildings, leaving the hose tower empty with its windows sealed.

At least until recently.

The shuttered building was reactivated last year and has reopened as a community multipurpose meeting space, thanks to public-private partnership.  Modern tables and chairs fill the 1,500 square-foot space, which can be arranged to accommodate about 100 people.

Click the podcast player above the photos to hear our conversation about his recent tour of the Hose Tower, plus details about the pieces of Greendale’s history uncovered during the project.
