Explore a Bronzeville building with a vibrant past... and a bright future!

An old building in the Bronzeville neighborhood has a new owner, and soon, will embark on the next chapter of its storied life.

The Milwaukee Youth Arts Center has acquired the former Baasen House with plans to expand its campus into the building, located directly across the street from its current location at 4th and Walnut St.

And the building, as OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo writes, has been just about everything.  Originally built as a private residence in 1874, it was eventually converted to a hospital.  It then became a distillery, a rooming house, and most recently, a medical clinic.

Tanzilo found clues from its past throughout the site (including some awesome floral wallpaper!).  But, most importantly, he filled me in about the bright future of the site as the second campus to a growing arts organization.

Click the player below to hear our interview. And make sure to visit OnMilwaukee.com to read his complete story about the building.
