Former casket company gets new life

A local video and event production company is relocating its headquarters to the Menomonee Valley, and it is moving into a somewhat unusual building -- a former casket company.

Plum Media broke ground on the $1.85 million project to renovate and upgrade the 1929 building near 14th and St. Paul Ave. last month.  Plum plans to move out of its rented space in the Third Ward once the project is complete.

OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo visited the site for this week's Urban Spelunking and joined me in studio to fill me in on the plans.

Signs from the building's past as Milwaukee Casket Co. still exist today, including a dry kiln used to prepare wooden boards for the coffins and original gothic-style lettering above the building's exterior doors.

What architectural details will incorporated into the design? Are the future tenants spooked about working in an old coffin company?
