World famous artist Keith Haring painted a mural in Milwaukee

Milwaukee is full of museums, you just have to look a litter harder to find some of them.

For example, the Milwaukee School of Engineering boasts a fantastic collection focused on the theme of work at the Grohmann Museum. There’s the Chudnow Museum of Yesteryear, an immersive walk back through time, kind of like the “Streets of Old Milwaukee” at Milwaukee Public Museum. We even have a museum at the airport — the Mitchell Gallery of Flight.

Another one to add to your list is the Haggerty Museum of Art on the Marquette University campus. It has 6,000 works in its collection, including an original mural by mega-famous contemporary artist Keith Haring.

The piece was commissioned in 1983 by the founding director of the museum. It's painted on plywood and was designed to beautify the construction area the museum. It was painted on both sides and affixed to the construction fence.

In the audio story above, Haggerty Museum Director and Chief Curator explain how it all came together.
