Look inside this former factory as it's transformed into apartments, creative hub

This week on Urban Spelunking, we’re checking back in at the Community Within the Corridor, a massive mixed use development coming to Milwaukee near 32nd and Center Street inside a former Briggs & Stratton factory.

88Nine visited the space earlier this year, and this week OnMilwaukee’s Bobby Tanzilo and I are back to check in on the progress.

By next summer, the former factory complex will offer 197 apartments and a sprawling creative hub, filled with a gym, daycare, laundromat, artist studios, media production, a small grocery store, laundromat and much more.

Milwaukee's Scott Crawford, Inc., led by developer Que El-Amin, secured financing for the $67 million project through a combination of private and public funds, including historic preservation tax credits. His company also held public listening sessions before any work was done to hear directly from residents in the 53210 zip code.

The development will bring transformational change to the site, which has been underused and mostly vacant since Briggs & Stratton left in the 1980s.

The oldest building on the site dates to 1906 and “were, over the years, home to Romadka Brothers trunk and luggage company, Harley-Davidson, Columbia Knitting and Manufacturing, Milsco Manufacturing, Westinghouse Lamp Co., Reliance Boiler Works and a number of shoemakers, including Mid-States Shoe Co., Ideal Shoe Manufacturing and A.H. Weinbrenner Shoe Co.,” writes Tanzilo in is piece on OnMilwaukee.
