Owners pledge to rebuild after historic Thiensville restaurant is destroyed by fire

As much as we love historic buildings on our Urban Spelunking podcast, we sometimes talk about new construction. And on this episode, OnMilwaukee's Bobby Tanzilo and I are covering both topics as we learn the bittersweet story The Cheel, a recently razed historic building in Thiensville.

The 1890 building was most home to a popular local Nepalese restaurant, owned by Jesse and Barkha Limbu Daily. The married couple poured countless hours into restoring the historic building after acquiring it in 2014. They invested in a top-down renovation, including restoring an ornamental tower overlooking the busy corner where it sat, a mimicking the original design.

Then, in November of 2019, disaster struck. A serious fire broke out, burning the building beyond repair, including the upstairs apartments. It was torn down last week.

Bobby and I remember the most recent chapter of the building, plus we turn the clock back to the 1890s to learn about its earliest occupants. Listen to this week's podcast to learn about the history, plus we share what we know about the owners' future plans.
