Milwaukee Film has announced a schedule of eight film screenings and events in celebration of Black History Month next month. The series is presented in partnership with 88Nine’s Rhythm Lab Radio and WNOV 860 AM/106.5 FM.
“Black history is still being written, and these films and events celebrate the ongoing influence our community has on culture and history,” Milwaukee Film's Geraud Blanks said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to have such a powerful and fun lineup to truly make this a celebration.”
Milwaukee Film's Black Lens program will host a screening every Thursday in February at 6:30 p.m. in the main house of the Oriental Theatre, 2230 N. Farwell Ave. The schedule is as follows:
· On Feb. 6, a series of shorts will make up this year’s “Black Women: Both Sides of the Lens” presentation.
· Leading into Valentine’s Day, “Love & Basketball” will be presented in 35mm on Feb. 13, marking the film’s 20th anniversary.
· A Best of Fest pick from the 2019 Milwaukee Film Festival, “The Remix: Hip Hop X Fashion” will return on Feb. 20, with film subject April Walker scheduled to appear.
· “Devil’s Pie: D’Angelo” will screen on Feb. 27, chronicling the legendary soul singer’s return to the public eye.
That's on top of four additional events:
· Black Women Behind the Lens, a discussion featuring local and national Black women filmmakers on Saturday, Feb. 8, at Nō Studios, 1037 W. McKinley Ave.
· The return of the Black Lens Lounge, a chance to enjoy food, drinks and music while meeting other film attendees, on Feb. 13 and 20 at XO Cocktail Parlor, 326 E. Mason St.
· Groove Theory: The D’Angelo Experience, featuring a collection of Milwaukee’s hottest bands performing the music of D’Angelo live and curated by Tim Ricketts and The Band Bazaar, on Saturday, Feb. 29, at the Cooperage, 822 S. Water St.
