"The Neighborhood Project": Lindsay Heights | Neighborhood Lift Up Day in Walnut Way

Listen: On a glorious Spring Saturday, I took a bike ride up North Avenue from the East Side to the Walnut Way Center on 17th Street. I beamed throughout the entire ride, as there were cleanups ( Milwaukee Riverkeeper was out in force!) and planting ( the Kilbourn Resevoir Victory Garden looks great so far!) and folks just generally enjoying the day. Milwaukee was absolutely sterling that morning. So what were my plans at the Walnut Way Center? I was there to check out their annual Neighborhood Lift Up Day, a day of service where folks from around the neighborhood and volunteers from around the city team up to pick up trash, get the gardens into shape, and plant seeds. Also, I'd be hard-pressed to find a better group of folks with whom to pass a Saturday morning and afternoon. Fortunately, I had my handy audio recorder with me, and I gathered some voices from the event: And because I couldn't let them hog all the fun, I even stuck around for awhile and got my hands dirty -- I always forget how much I like shoveling. And there will be more opportunities to lend a hand at Walnut Way in the future, so keep an eye on their website. Want to learn more about Lindsay Heights? You can start at with Zilber Neighborhood Initiative the Walnut Way Conservation Corp , or even our Neighborhood Project series with Johnsons Park . And of course, you can always get out to the neighborhood yourself and explore .
