This year we begin the 7 O'clock Sample segment with a few SUPER BREAKS?
What are super breaks you ask? They are those drum breaks that are sampled, again and again. They become ubiquitous and almost so popular, that we forget the original sample source.
There are many of these super breaks out there. James Brown's "Funky Drummer" has been samples 100s of times. Let's not forget about "Amen Brother" by the Winstons, which began it's own genre of music... Jungle ( Drum and Bass ).
Today we are looking at "Impeach The President" by the Honeydrippers. In 1973, the Honeydrippers had a R&B hit with this track. While the band went into soul music obscurity, the drum break had a huge revival when Hip Hop producers discovered the funky break.
in 1987, this drum break was dominating Hip Hop. Eric B & Rakim, Audio Two, Mc Shan and Dana Dane all had hits with this drum break. As the years went on, the break was used in numerous other songs such as "Jump" by Kris Kross, "That's the Way Love Goes" by Janet Jackson, "Unbelievable" by The Notorious B.I.G., "Luv Me, Luv Me" by Shaggy and Janet Jackson, and "I Can" by Nas, to name a few.
Here are some of my personal favorites...
