It's Tuesday, and that means it's SEVEN o'clock SAMPLE time.
I was listening to Portishead this weekend, and I was taking back to a time when I first discovered their music. I think it was 1998's LIVE IN NYC album that introduced me to Portishead. I was a few years late on the awesomeness of their music.
In 1994, their debut album DUMMY was released. The album spawned three singles: "Numb", "Sour Times", "Glory Box", and won the Mercury Music Prize in 1995 . The album is also credited with the creation of the sub-genre of Trip Hop music.
This album contains more samples than the average Hip Hop listener, like myself, may notice. Smokey Brooks, Weather Report, Isaac Hayes were some of the artists sampled to create Dummy. Anther song was taken from a very popular 1970 hit 45". SPILL THE WINE by Eric Burdon and War was released as a single in May 1970 , it was War's first chart hit, peaking at number three. It was also a top three hit in Canada and Australia. It charted #15 in Netherlands and #28 in Germany. The B-Side on this 45, was a non-album track called "Magic Mountain".
