Le Jazz Manouche, Gypsy Swing!

Sound Travels to France this week with different styles every day. Today, we kicked it off with gypsy jazz, or jazz manouche, a guitar-centric take on the swing sound that began when jazz came to France in the 20's and 30's. THE name in this genre is one of the early originals, Django Reinhardt but we introduce some others to you today in a short set of music that I also have for you here in a mini mix.

Tres chic, the vibe is one that conjures smoky jazz den, suits worn casually and grease-backed hair-dos with pencil-thin moustaches. But really, the stereotype is a bit dated and I thought it might be nice to play the vintage cuts in a small mix that also highlights some more contemporary takes on the venerable offshoot of the swing sound. Here's what I had for you today...

3. Beatrice Bonifassi "Belleville Rendez-Vous"
