Township Jazz & Batucada Be Bop

Hittin you all with some dope tunes this week, spiritual jazz from anywhere I can find it. Today, I zeroed in on some fine global jazz songs from South Africa and Brazil. The townships have their own sound and rhythms, but when jazz hit South Africa, the scene took notice. As well as having tons of straight ahead examples, there are plenty of songs that bring a distinctly South African feel to the game, even those that we tend to not think of like that. Like Hugh Masekela's hit "Grazing In The Grass," which is a jazz classic.

Add Brazil to a place where there's plenty of jazz at work. The Airto tune is almost funk, but funky and jazzy works as well. The Dom Um cut I ended the set with is a smoker, dance floor fire starter; surprised I havn't played that one for you till now. Here's today's set...

Malombo "Sangoma"

Hugh Masekela "Grazing In The Grass"

Airto "Stanley's Tune"

Dom Um Romao "Cosinha II"
