Red Baraat! Live @ The Peck Pavilion tonight

At 11am today I gave you a taste of Red Baraat's big brass sound, and I did it with good cause as the 8-member brass band is performing at the Peck Pavilion tonight (929 N. Water St.) at 7:30pm and of course, my pick for tonight.

The heart and soul of Red Baraat's sound is that brass band sound, big and thumpy. They rocked Alverno's Global Union a couple of years ago and are bringing their dynamic sound back tonight. Expect brass traditions from New Orleans, Europe and India to meld into one dynamic vibe built on bhangra rhythms and delivered with the charisma of the band's frontman Sunny Jain. Actually, it's hard to even identify any one member as a leader as the band's percussive and pulsating sound tends to push one or more of the crew to the fore for some ferocious solos. Good stuff.

Their new album, Shruggy Ji, has been a Sound Travels fave for a minute and I played "Holla Bol" at 11am...

The band was also featured on NPR's Tiny Desk music series early last year, a cool concept that is also fun to watch...
