Beintween strives to make art useful and to turn un-used spaces into art. Their latest project ICAN 2 LABS hopes to do just that...all inside of an old shipping container.
The new mobile classroom ICAN 2 LABS is changing the way we think of shared space and collaboration. ICAN 2 LABS will provide a space in Milwaukee's Harambee Neighborhood for the community to come together and share ideas.
It will sit on the new ARTery trail in that same neighborhood. The old walls are being replaced as the container floods with light from lots of windows, some of which will double as desks. They will try to tie into the historical nature of the site (the ARTery is built over an old railroad) by using old rail ties for the exterior. They will also up-cycle old plate glass from a green house in New Berlin. They hope that the building itself will have a storytelling component and double as a piece of architectural art.
"The Greater Milwaukee Committee (GMC) along with beintween and NEWaukee received a generous grant from ArtPlace America for 'Creational Trails" A Placemaking Experience in Milwaukee. As part of 'Creational Trails, they are expanding the definition of stage outdoors for the summer in 2014 as an extension of the Beerline recreational trails and an expression of the local culture within adjacent neighborhoods"
