‘Toy Story 5’ review: Playtime is back, with old friends and new

Every week on Cinebuds sponsored by Joe Wilde Garage Doors, Kristopher Pollard from Milwaukee Film and Radio Milwaukee’s Dori Zori review movies, tell you which ones are showing in our city and talk with the people who help bring them to the big screen.

Our bold and adventurous podcast hosts will go to fairly reasonable lengths to see a good movie. To infinity? No. Beyond? Definitely not.

Something they WILL do, though, is invite a new friend to join them for some general merriment with a few opinions thrown in for good measure. That’s what Dori and Kpolly did for this trip back to the playroom to review Toy Story 5 with special guest Heather Deaton — the winner of a “hotly contested” auction battle whose proceeds went to support Milwaukee Film.

And if you think Heather just came along for the ride, prepare yourself for a true three-person analysis of the beloved Pixar franchise, with our guest providing some valuable perspective as a parent and general appreciator of Toy Story. She even did some hard-nosed research in advance, watching the third and fourth installments of the franchise to make some insightful comparisons.

What really jumped out to all three reviewers was just how far Toy Story has come since its first entry, more than 30(!!!) years ago. Technology has this way of incrementally improving so you don’t really notice the stark differences … until you watch a CGI movie from 1995 and realize all of the human faces are so far from reality that they couldn’t find the uncanny valley with three compasses and a supercharged Google Maps.

Comparing old and new only makes sense when talking about Toy Story 5, because the story itself centers on technology and, essentially, the battle for our SOULS. Well, maybe it’s not that dramatic, but Pixar has always had a knack for digging deeper than your average animated movie studio (cough … Illumination … cough cough), and this one is no exception.

Heather brings a lot to the conversation, which you can hear in full by hitting that “Listen” button at the top of the page or finding Cinebuds wherever you do your podcast-enjoying.
