People rappel off building to support addicts

Dozens of people rappelled down the side of a downtown Milwaukee hotel last week to support those battling addition to alcohol and other drugs.

Enthusiastic volunteers lowered from the roof of the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 18 stories above ground, in the highly visible publicity stunt.  For participants, the act of stepping over the edge of the roof represented the freedom gained from conquering addiction, organizers said.

Shatterproof.org, a new nationwide organization focused on helping addicts, hosted the event as part of a national tour.  Launched late in 2013, the non-profit not only supports people battling addiction, but also advocates for research and changes to public policy.
