Caring for Veterans is one of the most important things our community can do, and here in Milwaukee, we have one of the oldest VA hospitals in the nation.
But something has been missing. There hasn't been a place for veterans' families to stay and be near to their loved ones while they recover.
Not until now, that is.
After record fundraising, the Clement J. Zablocki VA hospital last week broke ground on its new Fisher House. The house will provide families of veterans a place to stay while their loved one receives care.
The Fisher House will offer a comforting home for families, complete with 16 bedroom suites and a shared kitchen, dining room, living room and more.
Cecelia Gore of the Brewers Community Foundation was at the groundbreaking cereomony to show support and says she couldn't be happier about the new addition.
"Your mission is perfectly aligned with our interest in improving the quality of life for families in our community by focusing on health, education, recreation and basic needs," Gore said.
Also in attendance were Gov. Scott Walker and Rep. Gwen Moore. CEO of Fisher House Foundation Ken Fisher and Dan Buttrey from Fisher House Wisconsin received a standing ovation for his efforts in raising $3.3 million, a record for a community Fisher House.
