This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Brew City Bruisers, Milwaukee's all girl flat-track roller derby. Hundreds of women ages 21+ from different backgrounds have played over the years, helping to foster strong women athletes and community engagement. As a Brew City Bruiser, women have an opportunity to affect positive change in their own physical, social and mental health.
About five years ago, the Bruisers started a junior leagueto help foster those values in young girls too. The Brew City Micro Bruisers are the next generation of Roller Derby in Milwaukee. Open to girls ages 8-17, the Micro Bruisers meet once a week, practicing skills from basic skating to game strategy. Beginners can work their way up to the roster of the Junior Derby Team, and play bouts in public.
The Micro Bruiser program is lead by veteran skaters. Check out the interview in the player above to hear more from Coach Skittle and a Jackie Jackhammer, a Micro Bruiser that has been with the league since it's inception.
