A nearly 100 year old building is getting a 21st century facelift in the Lindsay Heights neighborhood, eventually to be converted to a self sustaining healthy food hub.
Nonprofit organization Walnut Way Conservation Corp. is leading the effort to restore the building in a project called "The Commons." By summer, it will be move-in ready for an Outpost popup grocery store and retail juice store between N. 16th and N. 17th streets on W. North Ave.
Under the plan, Milwaukee Center for Independence will also operate a commercial kitchen, staffed by local workers from the zip code. Fondy Food Center will also move its administrative offices to the location.
The project, The Commons, is a two-phase approach. After rehabbing the storefront is complete, Walnut Way will begin new construction on an adjacent vacant lot. The $4 million project will bring much needed healthcare to the neighborhood, focused on providing nutrition and wellness programming.
