Assistant Program Director

Job Type: Full-time Exempt
Supervisors: Program Directors
Salary Range: $60,000-69,000

General Functions

The Radio Milwaukee Assistant Program Director (APD) supports the Program Directors in advancing the strategic vision and day-to-day operations of 88Nine and HYFIN. This position serves as a critical partner in driving growth in listenership, ratings and revenue, while ensuring alignment with Radio Milwaukee’s mission and high standard of programming excellence.

The APD plays a key role in managing logistics, coaching talent, coordinating with peer departments and supporting audience engagement across all platforms. The APD will also serve as on-air talent from 6-10 p.m. Monday to Friday (pre-recorded) and 10 a.m.-noon Saturday as part of our Let’s Hear It! Listener-request program.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Operational & Administrative Support:

  • Assist the 88Nine and HYFIN Program Directors in the execution of programming initiatives and cross-departmental partnerships.
  • Lead scheduling logistics for the programming department, including paid time-off tracking, shift coverage and weekly updates.
  • Support day-to-day oversight of the audio production manager and pre-produced content quality control.
  • Manage implementation of programming-related events and specialty programs for 88Nine and HYFIN.
  • Support program-related components of marketing and underwriting campaigns.
  • Co-manage artist bookings in collaboration with the Music Directors.
  • Maintain and update programming calendars and timelines.

On-Air Talent Development:

  • Provide ongoing support for on-air staff, including scheduling, coaching and professional development.
  • Conduct air-check sessions to reinforce tone, delivery and brand alignment with Program Directors.
  • Help identify and recruit emerging talent, ensuring diversity and mission alignment.
  • Ensure compliance with FCC regulations and internal station policies for all stations.

Collaborative Projects & Initiatives:

  • Work across all departments to help grow audience engagement and satisfaction.
  • Assist with the scheduling of station imaging and promotions for 88Nine and HYFIN.
  • Co-manage the internship program, including onboarding, scheduling and learning experiences.
  • Support the ideation and development of new shows, experiences and content streams for 88Nine and HYFIN, including digital platforms.

Other Duties as Assigned:

  • Adapt to evolving organizational needs and take on new responsibilities as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of FCC guidelines, traffic systems and broadcast regulations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of diverse music genres and formats.
  • Experience using analytics to inform content or scheduling decisions.
  • Excellent communication, organization and leadership skills.
  • Ability to motivate and guide others while balancing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Strategic thinker with a collaborative spirit and a commitment to innovation and inclusion.

Education & Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in radio or broadcast media; nonprofit/public media  experience preferred.
  • Experience with audio scheduling software and production workflows.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Our Walker’s Point home is a creative environment that includes a full kitchen, green roof/deck and performance space. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. We are currently operating on a hybrid schedule with a minimum of four days per week in the office.
