Battle of the Bands to drum up funds for Girls Rock MKE

Local nonprofit Girls Rock MKE received an unpleasant surprise recently when it learned of a financial shortfall that left the organization with a tough challenge: raise $20,000 by year’s end to keep operations running in their current state.

Naturally, it turned to music as one way to remedy the situation — more specifically, a friendly Battle of the Bands happening at X-Ray Arcade from 3 to 6 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 24.

The organization set a fundraising goal of $5,000 for the all-ages event that it hopes to reach through a digital campaign (with help from the participating bands) and proceeds from ticket sales. Advance tickets are available online for $15, and attendees can also pick them up at the door the day of the show for $18.

The plan is to give each band 20 minutes to wow the audience, which will then vote for their favorites. Currently, the day’s lineup includes: Lauryl Sulfate & Her Ladies of Leisure, Panko Stankhole, June Gloom, Araelee Berberbaby and Ali J.

If you can’t make it to the show but still want to support the organization’s mission “to empower individuals of marginalized identities and diverse experiences through music education and performance,” you can visit Girls Rock MKE’s website. Donations help subsidize camper tuition assistance, instrument repair and supplies; and pay part-time staff directors, band coaches and instrument instructors at its camps.
