MKE Concert Picks: Rahill visits Cactus Club, DRAMA at Turner Hall

Chicago duo DRAMA (left) and the genre-bending Rahill shine particularly bright in a stellar week for live music in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee’s concert scene has a lot going on, so we look at the shows coming up to find the ones you’ll look back on and be glad you went. Then we add them to our weekly "Milwaukee Concert Picks."

As a dedicated enthusiast of house music, that passion is reflected in my long-running dance mix show, In The Mix. For seven years, this outlet has allowed me to share music that captivates audiences around the world and — a little more selfishly — connects me with exceptional talents like the one coming to Cactus Club this Sunday.

I had the privilege of featuring Rahill on my show in the fall, when she showcased her rhythmic mastery capable of seamlessly blending dub, world, R&B and other genres. You can (and should) revel in the magic this singer, songwriter, poet and DJ conjures by diving into the full set below. But you'd be missing out if you skipped the exceptional album Rahill released last year, Flowers at Your Feet, which includes the standout single "Fables" featuring Beck. Consider it a crash course before you check out this incredibly versatile, multi-disciplinary artist Sunday night at Cactus Club.

If you want to double up on the dance beats, Turner Hall Ballroom will supply an opportunity to do exactly that as Chicago's very own Na’el Shehade and Via Rosa — the dynamic duo behind DRAMA — grace the historic venue's stage Friday night.

Last November, the pair treated us to their irresistible EP, Till We Die, a collection of upbeat tracks that embody the signature Chicago sound, fun melodies and dreamy R&B vocals. We get another treat for this show, which gives Milwaukee the honor of kickstarting their 2024 tour. For anyone in the city seeking exceptional house music — or just a damn good time — the answer is crystal clear with DRAMA headlining and the talented Ric Wilson, a friend from Chicago, to open Friday's show at Turner Hall.
