Milwaukee’s concert scene has a lot going on, so we look at the shows coming up to find the ones you’ll look back on and be glad you went. Then we add them to our weekly Milwaukee Concert Picks, sponsored by Urban Ecology Center.
If the headline and the long list below didn’t tip you off, there’s a LOT of live music happening in Milwaukee between now and next Wednesday (the arbitrary day we chose to post this every week). There’s so much, in fact, Milwaukee can’t contain it. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover, so let’s get started.
Chronology makes organizing this whole endeavor much easier, and that means ArtBlaze is up first when it makes its triumphant return Friday. This annual event is more of a newbie to our city, and 2026 will be the third year it combines inflatable creativity with danceable good times.
The first part of that is an endeavor shared by FuzzPop and UW-Milwaukee’s School of Architecture & Urban Planning, who came up with an installation inspired by archaea — a thing we were familiar with right away and didn’t need to look up at all. They’re single-celled organisms that definitely are NOT bacteria but quite certainly are excellent inspiration for 25-foot-tall inflatable art.
This is not, however, Milwaukee Art Picks. So when you’re not marveling at the visuals or checking out the many vendors (or maybe while you’re doing both of those things), make sure you enjoy the entertainment lineup that starts with Cullah at 4 p.m. and continues with a dance lesson from Panadanza at 5 p.m., Creature Weather at 6 p.m., and even more dancing with A.I.M. led by Davien Holton at 7 p.m. and a silent disco at 8 p.m.
Pointing ourselves north brings us to West Bend, where one of the handful of unique annual art events that’s popped up in the area over the last couple years returns to the Museum of Wisconsin Art. Art & Chalk Fest is best known for the medium right there in the name, as more than a hundred chalk artists show up to create new works live on the museum grounds (literally).
But the event taking place this Saturday and Sunday is more than the very cool pieces you’ll be very careful not to step on. The museum folks have also lined up some skilled musicians to perform this weekend, including a couple 88Nine reco’s: Alyssia Dominguez from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday and Listening Party from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday. So regardless of which day you head to West Bend, there’s good music waiting for you.
Let’s stick on Saturday and go south to Cudahy, where X-Ray Arcade will mix quality and quantity as Burn Bright MKE presents 10 for $10, which is precisely what it sounds like: 10 bands on the bill for 10 bucks. Faithful Radio Milwaukee readers/listeners will note in shining armour and Fake My Death in the lineup, and with music going from 1 to 11 p.m., we’re fairly confident there will be something in the mix that’s on your wavelength.
Swinging back toward downtown brings us to the Henry Maier Festival Grounds and Black Arts Fest MKE, which runs from noon until 10 p.m. Saturday. The event earns the “Arts” segment of its title by featuring a wide range of creativity, from blues and soul to hair and fashion to poetry and dance, all around the theme of “Unity & Community.”
Finally, we jump forward just a couple days to Aug. 4 and a double-shot of artists woven into the fabric of 88Nine: Of Monsters and Men with Gordi at the Riverside Theater. We’ve been playing the headliner almost all the way back to Radio Milwaukee’s founding, and Gordi got on our radar (and everyone else’s) in 2017 and never left, even popping in for a Studio Milwaukee Session almost exactly a year ago. Catching the Icelandic band and Australian solo artist together on one night isn’t exactly a common occurrence, so take advantage next Tuesday.
