Death Cab for Cutie plan return to Milwaukee for Summerfest

Milwaukee World Festival

It seems like just yesterday that we hooked up a group of Radio Milwaukee contest winners in connection with Death Cab for Cutie’s show at the Miller High Life Theatre as the band toured behind new album I Built You a Tower. Memories of that July concert haven’t quite faded, but it appears the indie icons are eager to make more, because Summerfest just announced that they’ll be back for a BMO Pavilion performance at the 2027 festival.

Death Cab for Cutie are slated for the first Friday of next year’s event and will headline the stage June 25. They will, of course, have an opener (several, in fact), but details about that will need to wait until Summerfest do their big lineup drop early next year.

For now, you can keep your sights on when tickets go on sale to the general public for Death Cab for Cutie’s June 25 show, which will happen at 10 a.m. this Friday, Nov. 6, online via Ticketmaster and at the Summerest box office. As with all BMO Pavilion concerts, this one will have free general-admission seating on a first-come-first-served basis the day of the show. But with Death Cab’s popularity in Milwaukee, it might be a good idea to grab one of those reserved seats.

Artist bio

Formed in Bellingham, Wash., in 1997, Death Cab for Cutie quickly emerged as one of the defining bands of their era, propelled by the emotionally incisive songwriting of co-founder, vocalist, guitarist and primary songwriter Benjamin Gibbard.

The band’s global breakthrough came with 2003’s Transatlanticism, a platinum-certified release later named by NPR as one of the decade’s most important recordings. Their 2005 major-label debut Plans pushed them to even greater prominence, earning platinum status and their first Grammy nominations. Subsequent albums — including Narrow Stairs, Codes and Keys, and Kintsugi — continued to expand their sonic palette while securing a total of eight Grammy nominations and cementing their critical and cultural standing.

In the years since, Death Cab for Cutie have consistently reaffirmed their relevance and creative ambition. 2018’s Thank You for Today marked a new chapter, featuring the chart-topping single “Gold Rush,” while later projects highlighted the band’s collaborative spirit and civic engagement — from high-profile musical partnerships to The Georgia EP, which raised over $100,000 for voting-rights efforts.

Gibbard’s 2022 tribute project Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono earned widespread acclaim, the band released Asphalt Meadows that same year, and 2026’s I Built You a Tower marked their 11th studio album, underscoring a legacy defined not only by longevity, but by continual artistic growth and purpose.
