Carl “Buffalo” Nichols moved from Milwaukee to Austin a couple years ago, but — like most of us — the place you grew up tends to call you back pretty frequently. For Nichols, the callback comes in the form of a short tour that’ll bring him to Cactus Club on Feb. 5.
Nichols was here just a couple months ago for Summerfest and was kind enough to swing by our place for a Studio Milwaukee Session. Although it hasn’t been long, he’ll have at least a couple new songs for his set: the recently released singles “Meet Me in the Bottom” and “Friends” (you can read about the latter in this recent “On First Listen”).
The two singles were produced by TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone, and while it’s too early to say whether they represent a shift in Nichols’ sound, they’re more than intriguing enough to turn out for the Cactus Club show and hear for yourself.
