Summerfest adds a serving of Cake to BMO Pavilion lineup

Milwaukee World Festival

It’s been six years since alt icons Cake last visited Summerfest and nearly 14 years since their last proper studio album. Next year will bring both dry spells to an end.

The band had previously announced a forthcoming LP (sharing the news with our public-radio buddies at KSTX), and Summerfest on Monday announced Cake as BMO Pavilion headliners the first Friday of the festival, June 27.

The extended gap between releases is a little surprising considering the band’s last record, 2011’s Showroom of Compassion, spent its first week at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart. It wasn’t a massive departure from the group’s tried-and-true recipe, although — as has always been the case both with Cake and their namesake dessert — there’s plenty of enjoyment to be had from consistency.

That’s no small feat for a band formed in 1991 and on an initial release cycle that saw them put out three straight platinum albums in five years: 1996’s Fashion Nugget, 1998’s Prolonging the Magic and 2001’s Comfort Eagle.

The show next June will no doubt pull from material both new and old, and your first shot at reserved tickets is an artist presale that starts at 10 a.m. this Wednesday, Nov. 20. There’s also a venue presale at 10 a.m. Thursday and the general sale at 10 a.m. Friday. For more information on all of those, go to the show page on Ticketmaster.
