Concert updates: Hippo Campus delay, plus Dinosaur Jr. and Snail Mail

The Pabst Theater Group unleashed a flurry of concert announcements Wednesday morning, including a couple new shows that are right in Radio Milwaukee’s wheelhouse.

Before we get to the additions, PTG issued an update on the Hippo Campus show scheduled for Wednesday night at the Riverside Theater. The snow-related state of emergency issued by Milwaukee County has pushed the concert to Thursday night at the same venue and with the same 8 p.m. start time (doors at 7 p.m.). All tickets and parking passes will be valid for the new date.

It’s safe to say we won’t have the same problem for one of the new shows announced today: an epic team-up of Dinosaur Jr. and Snail Mail on July 31 at Turner Hall Ballroom.

While generationally separated, the co-headliners share sonic similarities that make for an enticing night of live music. Dinosaur Jr. came along in 1984 as one of the formative influences on the burgeoning alternative scene and, after wading through years of turmoil, brought their original lineup back together in 2005. They’ve since released a quintet of studio records: Beyond (2007), Farm (2009), I Bet on Sky (2012), Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not (2016) and Sweep It Into Space (2021).

Snail Mail — the project fronted by Lindsey Jordan — haven’t reached that level of output quite yet but do have a pair of excellent albums under their belts: 2018’s Lush and 2021’s Valentine. The former was a prototypical breakout situation and rightfully landed on several year-end lists, in addition to scoring the coveted “Best New Music” tag from Pitchfork. The same honor went to Valentine, which was just as vulnerable as its predecessor but far more forceful.

With the show announcement, you wonder if Jordan’s got some new music in the pipeline. For now, we’ll focus on this formidable combination coming to Turner Hall on July 31, with tickets going on sale to the general public this Friday online and at the Pabst/Riverside box offices.

Also, just a few ticks earlier on the concert calendar, The Kooks will play the Riverside Theater on June 10 with special guest lovelytheband. The two acts combined forces in 2024 on the standalone single “Jeanie,” which came out just ahead of The Kooks announcing upcoming album Never/Know. Their seventh studio effort is scheduled to drop May 9, just a few weeks before their Milwaukee performance.

Tickets for The Kooks’ June 10 show with lovelytheband also go on sale at 10 a.m. this Friday online and at the Pabst/Riverside box offices.
