Ethiopia Mixtape

Sound Travels this weekend was an all Ethiopian affair; a showcase of both vintage and modern sounds from the only African nation to have been neither colonized nor conquered. A lot of new music in the mix; from the dub and reggae of groups like Zuvloon Dub System to hip hop from Bole 2 Harlem and Teddy Yo. Futuristic vibes from DC-based Mikael Seifu whose Ethiopian roots are exposed in his starkly minimal compositions. I can think of no Ethiopian mix that shouldn't have a place for some of the country's greatest musicians; like the inimitable Mulatu Astatqe, the godfather of modern Ethiopian music or Mahmoud Ahmed, one of the nation's greatest singers.

There's a lot more to the mix and Ethiopian music just has a certain vibe to it due to the continuity their culture has had. Enjoy the mix...
