Studio Milwaukee Session: Greg Freeman

Rachel Tarby

All year long, we welcome nationally and globally touring artists to our stage for Studio Milwaukee Sessions, sponsored by Ellenbecker Investment Group. If you want to be in the live audience for these VIP experiences, become a member today.

Playing a mini-set at Studio Milwaukee is an instant-feedback situation. The audience is within arm’s reach, which makes their faces easy to read and their audible response even easier.

So when Greg Freeman performed “Costs” from his just-released album All Set the Bone, he could quickly discern the emotional impact it had on the people lucky enough to be in the room. Eyes closed. Heads swayed gently. Applause came as the final strum of his Rickenbacker guitar hung in the air.

It was well worth the effort required on a track Freeman said is “a hard song to sing in the studio,” which means the live environment — without the benefit of multiple takes — is several multitudes more difficult.

In our space, “Costs” sounded lovely and delicate, particularly with the stripped-down setup of just Freeman and the guitar. His voice conjured thoughts of Neil Young, one of the artists he mentioned in the mid-set interview (along with Skip James) who left a mark on him over the years.

Along with fellow All Set the Bone tracks “Indu” and “Bury Me the Shovel,” it made for an easy entry to the week on a crisp and sunny Monday afternoon.
