5 things to do this weekend | Sept. 28th-Oct. 1st

#1

Grieves

It's been over three years since his last album, Winter & The Wolves, but Grieves has re-emerged with a modernized sound that is lush and intoxicating, pairing punchy drums with thick layers of synths and warm bass lines. Whether dark and moody, or bright and upbeat, Grieves smoothly navigates the new soundscape, penning verses that range from confessional to carefree. (It's also 88Nine's download of the week!) Don't forget to get there early to see Dem Atlas open up the show.

Friday 9pm @ Cactus Club ($15)

#2

Band Together

"Can the power of music connect people from different Milwaukee neighborhoods?" That’s the idea behind the second annual Band Together, a live music event with a diverse lineup featuring some of Milwaukee’s top bands performing music from a variety of genres – from R&B with Adi Armour to Salsa with Cache, glam rock with Tigernite to jazz with Kymaera. Great local food, rooftop party, dancing, and pizza party as well. Can't go wrong with that! Plus, your ticket benefits Radio Milwaukee. No brainer. Grab tickets here: https://radiomilwaukee.org/bandtogether
Saturday, September 30 right here at 88Nine 220 E. Pittsburgh ($10)

BVGN

Bay View is bumpin' with small businesses lately and Bay View Gallery Night is a great way to explore them all. Food trucks, live music, and of course plenty of visual art on display across the growing neighborhood. Map and more info: http://www.bvgn.org/
Friday, September 29 - 5PM - 10PM (varies by location) free

Bo & Airo (album release) + Rusty Pelicans + Faux Fiction

Bass player Bo Triplex and Drummer Airo Kwil are an intriguing duo known collectively as Bo & Airo. I'm always intrigued when the vocals come from behind the drum kit and these cats are looking o step up their game with the release of their debut  EP at Company Brewing this Friday. Whether you're there for the album or not, these dudes know how to do it, as does Milwaukee's legendary hip hop crew The Rusty P's who, with Faux Fiction are there to get thinks cooking early.

Friday 10pm @ Company Brewing

#5

Angel Olsen

“Ms. Olsen knows the secret of pop that hits home: Within the form, keep an unruly heart.” — The New York Times

“The third studio album by Olsen is the St. Louis-born artist’s proverbial great leap forward, confirming her as not only a powerful singer but a writer more thanm willing to play with genre, mood and words to achieve her particular brand of convergence.” — Los Angeles Times

That's all fine Angel Olsen is putting in some work. After a completely sold-out US tour earlier this year, plus selling out her largest headline show to date at London’s Roundhouse last week, Angel Olsen continues to ride the wave of her acclaimed album, My Woman, out now on Jagjaguwar. She'll be doing her thing this Sunday at the iconic Pabst Theater.

Sunday 7pm @ Pabst Theater ($22.50)
