Standing out among Milwaukee’s well-populated festival scene is a creative challenge to any event organizer. Introducing skateboards to the mix isn’t a bad way to set yourself apart, and Anodyne Coffee will once again provide that differentiation as its Bean Black Block Party returns this Saturday.
The fourth annual event at Anodyne’s Walker’s Point Roastery location (224 W. Bruce St.) runs from noon to 5 p.m. and packs plenty into those five hours: live music, vendors peddling vintage and locally made items, food trucks, brews (both beer and coffee) and, of course, skateboard ramps.
The free-to-all block party is open to skaters and non-skaters alike, with Cream City Skatepark on hand to cater to both. They’ll provide the ramps and obstacles to challenge more skilled participants, while also running a free workshop for kids 12 and under from noon to 1 p.m. Joining the familiar sound of wheels on pavement is a full entertainment lineup featuring local acts, many of which include Anodyne team members:
- Muzzle
- Cherry Clerk
- Soma
- Matty Timmons
- So Zuppy
Bruce Street neighbors Station 1846 will supply snacks and beverages, and there will also be food trucks on hand from Café Corazón and Twisted Plants. Grabbing a beer at the event will provide more than refreshment, as Indeed Brewing Co. will donate a portion of all its sales to National DIY Skatepark, a local nonprofit dedicated to the creation and preservation of youth recreational spaces.
Local vendors will show off their talent and creativity as well, with an array of art, pottery, handmade jewelry and vintage finds available. Some of the vendors scheduled to be on hand include Ina Maka, East Side Jawnz, Jans Journeys Vintage, 9th Place Vintage, Soul Seeds by Calynn Klohn, Beth Eaton Pottery and Dusty Bird Projects.
