As someone who proudly participates in Black Arts Fest MKE every year (you can catch “The Culture Plug” hosting the Cultural Stage, of course), I can tell you this is much more than a festival; it’s a celebration of Black excellence, creativity, culture and community. From national recording artists and heartfelt tributes to cultural competitions, and interactive activities, this year’s event offers something for every generation.
Whether you’re coming for the music, the fashion, the food or the culture, here are my top 10 reasons to experience Black Arts MKE Fest this Saturday:
1. A Tribute to Anthony Latimore by The Latimore Brothers
This year’s performance by The Latimore Brothers will undoubtedly be the most emotional moment of the festival. Following the passing of Anthony Latimore earlier this year, the family returns to the stage to honor his life, his legacy and the gift he loved sharing most: entertaining people through music. More than a concert, this is an opportunity for Milwaukee to celebrate one of its hometown legends and thank him for the joy he brought to generations of audiences.
2. Dave Hollister
The national recording artist headlines with the signature vocals and timeless R&B hits that have made him one of the most respected voices in the genre. If you’re a fan of classic R&B, this is a performance you won’t want to miss.
3. Divine Nine Party
The Divine Nine Party celebrates the rich history, service and impact of historically Black fraternities and sororities. Expect music, fellowship, dancing and an atmosphere filled with pride as members of Black Greek-letter organizations come together in celebration.
4. The Michael Jackson Tribute by Brew City Soul
Get ready to sing, dance and relive the music of one of the greatest entertainers of all time. Brew City Soul’s Michael Jackson tribute promises an afternoon packed with iconic hits and unforgettable performances.
5. The Black Hollywood Experience
Where else can you attend a Black Hollywood panel discussion and then stay for a karaoke competition inspired by some of the most iconic Black films ever made? This interactive experience blends entertainment, nostalgia and culture into one unforgettable event.
6. African Heritage Hair Show
Creativity takes center stage as stylists showcase incredible designs celebrating African heritage, beauty and innovation. Even better, competitors will compete for a $500 Best of Show cash prize, making this one of the festival’s premier competitions.
7. Essence of Style Fashion Design Competition
Watch emerging designers present original collections inspired by African culture and contemporary fashion. With a $500 Best of Show cash prize on the line, expect bold creativity and standout designs from some of the region’s most talented fashion creators.
8. BAFMKE Fine Art Show Finale
Celebrate Milwaukee’s visual artists as they present original works across a variety of media during the BAFMKE Fine Art Show Finale. Artists will also compete for a $500 Best of Show cash prize, making this a must-see event for anyone who appreciates Black artistry and creative expression.
9. Pop Ups with Pops
One of the festival’s most meaningful experiences, Pop Ups with Pops celebrates Black fatherhood by creating space for fathers and families to connect through fun, engaging activities. It’s a powerful reminder that Black Arts Fest MKE is about strengthening community as much as celebrating culture.
10.Classic Car & Bike Show
Car enthusiasts won’t want to miss the impressive display of classic cars, Corvettes, custom motorcycles and vintage rides showcased throughout the day. Whether you’re passionate about automobiles or simply appreciate beautiful craftsmanship, this all-day attraction is worth exploring.
Black Arts MKE Fest continues to be one of Milwaukee’s signature cultural celebrations, bringing together music, fashion, visual arts, entrepreneurship, film, history and family in one unforgettable experience. It’s a festival that celebrates not only artistic excellence, but also the people, traditions, and stories that continue to shape our community.
If you’ve never experienced Black Arts MKE Fest, this is the year to go. And if you’ve been before, you already know why it’s one of the best celebrations of Black culture in Milwaukee.
