The Milwaukee Public Market said goodbye to Pat’s Rib Place over the summer, leaving the spot between Thai-Namite and the West Allis Cheese & Sausage Shoppe vacant. Over the weekend, the market filled that spot and rebalanced its barbecue equation by welcoming David Alan Alan’s Smokehouse & Saloon.
“We’re beyond excited to share our love of barbecue with the Milwaukee community,” co-owner David O’Bryan said in a release. “Joining the impressive list of vendors at the market means the world to us, and we’re ready to open our doors to welcome both new and returning customers to enjoy the food we’re so passionate about.”
That passion started in O’Bryan’s home in Mukwonago, which sports two smokers that churn out food he and his wife Tina thought was worth sharing far and wide. The first step was opening the original David Alan Alan’s in Mukwonago, and now they’re on to the next chapter with a new location at the Public Market.
Food-wise, you can expect handcrafted barbecue staples like St. Louis Ribs, pulled pork and chicken, and brisket, as well as sides like mac and cheese. Then there’s the saloon part of their setup that of course features smoked cocktails, which includes their take on an Old Fashioned.
We’d be remiss not to address the whole name situation: a double-up of David’s middle name that started with a series of head traumas (seriously). In addition to knowing his way around a smoker, David spends time snowboarding — usually upright, but in one fateful case not so much, leading to a concussion and a trip to the ICU. Asked his name, he replied, “David Alan Alan.”
The rest is history. Or current events since the restaurant is open now. You can stop by for a bite or a sip (or both) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
