Inspiration can come from anywhere. Even the Disney Channel.
Granted, the Mouse House’s kid-friendly network isn’t a frequently tapped source of music motivation. It’s usually something like a big life moment (as with one of our other Milwaukee Music Premieres from today) or the elation from finding new love or the frustration from NOT finding new love.
But, occasionally, it’s the Disney Channel. And if that yields songs like “Think Fast” from Milwaukee pop-rock quartet Oh Geeez, Not Again, it’s hard to argue with the results.
You also can’t argue with the band’s choice of show: The Owl House, which every parent should put in front of their child, if for no other reason than to undo any damage caused by the insipid Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.
The animated adventure series originally inspired Oh Geeez, Not Again to pen a first draft of “Think Fast” back in 2022 before throwing it on the “not quite there yet” pile. Then, the track found its hero in drummer Alex Dollenmayer, who never gave up on sharing it with the world. A little bit of imagination turned it into a 2000s pop-punk throwback, with the curious combination of synth and banjo thrown in “to give it the Oh Geeez, Not Again flair,” as the band told us.
They also explained the ties between “Think Fast” and The Owl House as “the story of finding someone who inspires you — a friend who makes you feel unstoppable. While the world may try to keep the two of you down, your desire for adventure always breaks you both free.”
The song has a “bust loose” nature that’ll bring you right back to the early aughts and might just land on your running playlist (if that’s your thing). Driving guitars and a frenetic pace pull you through the story in a shade over 2 minutes, with Sean McGibany and Jack Gilmond trading vocal duties:
I think you know where I’ve been
I think you know where it’s going
You see the look in their eyes
Thought we were nothing but joking
Blast off, they’ll be trying to slow it
But it’s only just a matter of time
“Think Fast” officially comes out April 22, but if you act fast you can hear it live tonight (April 17) as Oh Geez, Not Again wraps up their “Blaze a Trail” tour at Cactus Club with support from Wildered and Royal Mill. It’s also available on demand using the player at the top of this page and airing on 88Nine throughout today (6:30 and 10:30 a.m.; 2:30 and 6:30 p.m.).
