A very special hour with The Smile, this Sunday on 88Nine

It’s still a couple days until Christmas, but we’ve got an early present for you.

This Sunday at 2 p.m., we’re bringing The Smile to 88Nine for an hour-long radio special. The centerpiece of this musical feast is a series of live recordings from the band’s concerts in Rome and Berlin earlier this year. On top of that, 88Nine music director Erin Wolf will play select tracks from The Smile and Thom Yorke’s solo work to round out the full 60 minutes.

The trio of Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner have stayed quite busy over the past couple years, including a sold-out show at Milwaukee’s Riverside Theater in November of 2022. That performance was in support of their debut album, A Light for Attracting Attention, which got not one but two companions this year.

It started in January with sophomore effort Wall of Eyes and continued in August with the unexpected announcement of a second release in 2024: Cutouts. Wolf featured one of that album’s singles, “Zero Sum,” on a late-summer installment of What’s All This, which will happily give up its regular Sunday slot for The Smile radio special.

Wolf’s show will return the following Sunday, Dec. 29, with a playlist featuring the absolute best new music she shared with you over the past year. Will The Smile land one of those coveted spots? We’ll see. For now, tune in at 2 p.m. this Sunday for a full hour dedicated to a band that certainly left their mark on 2024.
